It is not a lab test or an engineering claim. It is customer-reported experience, collected directly from buyers.
In the 2026 study, Ford ranked as the top mainstream brand, a distinction it had not held since 2010. The brand climbed from a much lower position in recent years to reach No. 1 among mainstream automakers, while also placing second overall among corporations and third overall among all brands measured.
That climb included the largest year-over-year improvement of any mainstream brand: 41 fewer problems per 100 vehicles compared with the prior year. Lincoln, Ford’s premium arm, also moved up, climbing to No. 6 from No. 8 among premium brands.
A brand-level quality result is different from a single model award. It suggests the improvement runs through Ford’s design, manufacturing, and software processes broadly, rather than being tied to one popular nameplate having a good year.
For a shopper narrowing a list of mainstream brands, that distinction carries weight. Reported problems come from other owners living with the vehicle daily, not from Ford’s own engineering claims, so the ranking reflects what buyers actually experienced after driving the vehicle home.
For Ford specifically, the result functions as something close to a reputational reset. A brand that sat far outside the top tier a few years ago is now the reference point mainstream shoppers are told to measure against, and that makes the study a useful credibility signal for anyone in-market right now.
Ford tested 10 models in the 2026 study, and seven of them placed in the top three of their respective segments, the highest percentage of any automaker measured. That is a wide spread across body styles, not a single standout carrying the average.
The Ford F-150, Ford Mustang, and Ford Super Duty each ranked highest in their segment, marking the second year in a row all three topped their categories. The Ford Escape, Explorer, Expedition, and Maverick also placed in the top three of their respective segments.
Ford also improved in nearly every category J.D. Power measures. Infotainment quality saw the largest gain, coming in 11 points better than the industry average, while powertrain reliability improved as well.
The ranking followed a company-wide restructuring rather than a single fix. In 2023, Ford unified its Vehicle Engineering, Manufacturing, Supply Chain, and Quality teams under one organization, aiming to catch problems before they reached a customer’s driveway.
That included hiring roughly 300 veteran engineers to run weekly design reviews, hunting for failure points before a vehicle design ever reached the factory floor. Ford also integrated suppliers earlier in the development process, cutting launch issues by 30 percent year over year.
On the software side, Ford now stress-tests code through hundreds of thousands of automated scenarios before it reaches a vehicle, catching bugs earlier than before. Together, these changes point to a quality effort built into the process from the start, not added on afterward.
