The 2027 Ford Explorer arrives with a short but useful list of changes, and most of them show up as new packages and options rather than a full redesign. Five trims make up the lineup: Active, ST-Line, Tremor, Platinum and ST. Every one of them seats six or seven people across three rows, and every one of them pairs an EcoBoost engine with a 10-speed automatic transmission and intelligent four-wheel drive.
What changed for 2027 matters most if you already had a particular Explorer trim in mind. The ST picks up a dark appearance package. Platinum can be ordered with the larger engine. Tremor gains a comfort and audio bundle. Two new paint colours join the palette, and a security feature set is now offered across the range. Here is what each update actually includes.
The headline addition for 2027 is the Sinister Package, available on the Explorer ST. It is a dark appearance package built around four specific pieces:
The powertrain underneath is the same as the standard ST: a 3.0L twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V6 rated at 400 horsepower and 415 lb-ft of torque on premium fuel. The Sinister Package changes how the ST looks, not how it drives. For anyone who liked the ST but wanted a harder-edged, blacked-out version of it, this is the factory answer.
The Platinum comes standard with the 2.3L EcoBoost four-cylinder, and for 2027 it can be upgraded to the 3.0L EcoBoost V6. Choosing that engine also brings quilted leather seating surfaces and an exclusive wheel style, so the upgrade covers the cabin as well as the drive. Platinum also sits on 210 mm of minimum running ground clearance, slightly higher than the 193 mm on Active and ST-Line.
Tremor models fitted with the 3.0L EcoBoost V6 can now add the Sun & Sound Package. It includes an upgraded B&O Sound System, massaging front seats and a power moonroof. Tremor already stands as the most off-road-focused Explorer, with 220 mm of minimum running ground clearance and an approach angle of 24.1 degrees, so the new package addresses comfort rather than capability.
The Ford Security Package is now offered on all 2027 Explorer models. It is included for one year from the new-vehicle warranty start date, and after that it can be added as a one-time purchase option.
Two paint colours join the range for 2027: Avalanche Grey and Ruby Red Metallic Tinted Clearcoat. Active, ST-Line, Platinum and ST can also be ordered with the Slick Roof Conversion option, which removes the standard roof rails for a cleaner roofline.

Both output ratings are achieved using premium fuel. Fuel consumption ratings are based on Government of Canada approved test methods, and actual fuel consumption will vary. The 3.0L V6 is also available on Tremor and Platinum.
Second-row captain’s chairs are standard on every 2027 Explorer, which gives you six seats. A second-row bench seat is available on every model except Tremor and raises capacity to seven. PowerFold third-row seats are standard on ST and Platinum, and available on Tremor.
Cargo space measures 461 litres behind the third row with all seats in place. Fold everything down and Active and ST-Line open up to 2,431 litres, while Tremor, Platinum and ST reach 2,416 litres. Front-row leg room runs to 1,093 mm on Active and ST-Line, with 1,089 mm on Tremor, Platinum and ST.
