2022: The Year Of Electrification For Ford Vehicles

The year 2022 may still seem like a long way off, but we’re looking toward the future. The automotive industry is changing, and in the spirit of innovation, with the help of the Federal government, Ford is moving toward an electric future. The federal government has told Ford that it is willing to do what it takes to bring electric vehicle production to Ontario. This means Ford Motor Company of Canada, along with the Canadian and Ontario governments are investing a total of $1.8-billion to make Ford the first automaker in Canada to build Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) at its Oakville Assembly Complex beginning in 2024. Five Ford EV models will eventually be available from that location.

Ford plans to have its first BEV from Oakville roll off the line in 2025. The Oakville plant is planned to be one of the highest volume BEV plants in North America. But you don’t have to wait that long for your Ford BEV.

E-Transit

In 2022, Ford will launch the EV Transit. The best-selling van in Canada is about to lead businesses into the future with a true work van designed to meet their real-world challenges. The EV Transit is also built without compromise. With the battery underneath the body of the vehicle, your cargo space remains intact, giving you the luxury of a maximum available payload of 3800 lbs. It will also come equipped with a FordPass Connect modem featuring a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot that can record driver data for the van’s managers, which includes GPS tracking, geofencing, and vehicle diagnostics.

F-150 Electric

Come model-year 2022, the F-150 will add a true battery-electric drivetrain to its fleet. The F-150 EV will certainly be able to continue the truck’s tradition of hauling and towing serious loads, as can be seen by Ford’s decision to preview the powertrain by showing it pulling a train’s worth of F-150s in a video released last year. It is also anticipated that the F-150 EV will sport motors at each axle and manage to top 200 miles on a full charge of its large battery pack.

You can also look forward to a re-styled front end that offers even more aerodynamic efficiency. Some other features to look out for include: a mostly closed-off grille, a reworked lower fascia that cuts even further into the truck’s approach angle, lower side skirts, and model-specific wheels.

Ford’s Electric Lineup

If you can’t wait until 2022 for your Ford EV, there is a whole lineup of Hybrid Electric and fully electric vehicles ready for you to choose from. BEVs are powered completely by a rechargeable battery so you’ll never have to stop for gas or an oil change, while Hybrid Electric Vehicles use battery and gas to optimize fuel efficiency and performance. Plug-in Hybrid Electric vehicles are also powered by both battery and gas, using the anther first and switching to gas only when the battery is depleted.

Ford Pass Charging Network

Ford is offering its all-electric vehicle customers North America’s largest electric vehicle public charging network, with more than 12,000 places to charge, including fast charging, and more than 35,000 charge plugs. That’s more than any other automotive manufacturer. Through FordPass on a mobile device or in each vehicle’s on-screen dashboard, customers will be able to monitor charging at home, and easily find and pay for easy, one-stop charging at FordPass Charging Network stations.

With both at-home and on-the-go charging powered by the FordPass app and in-vehicle screen, many customer hesitations surrounding electric vehicle ownership are being addressed. A Ford Connected Charge Station can fully power a vehicle overnight while they sleep.

Looking to The Future

Looking ahead, Ford has a bold strategy that includes going “all-in” on electrified vehicles. Earlier this year, the company announced an $11 billion investment in electrification, with plans to put 40 new electrified vehicles on the road by 2022, bringing more capability, performance and efficiency to nameplates Canadians already know and love. Ford believes electrification is on its way to a tipping point, as improved technology and infrastructure meet increasing consumer demand. These improvements are allowing Ford to bring new, capable and electrifying vehicles to market that truly meet the diverse needs and expectations of Canadians.
